A note from me: It is now 2024 and I am going to re-post this because it matters. And June is just around the corner.
We all need to do it. During the month of June we should boycott the stores that offend our morals and throw our beliefs right back into our faces. I am damn sure gonna try to do it. I know there are more of us than there are of them and I think we could hurt their bottom line. If we stick together.
The only rainbow I want to see is the one God makes. I don’t like the ‘in your face’ message on flagpoles everywhere (even on our embassies). I don’t want to hear indoctrination over loudspeakers in stores and see it on merchandise. It offends me. The first day of June, I am refusing to shop and spend in stores that don’t respect my personal values and beliefs. For one month. To rephrase a dear friends quote: “What do YOU think it is about YOUR store that makes YOU think I will abandon MY values shop there because YOU pander* to a minority?”
*Pander: Definition from Dictionary.com
verb (used without object)
to cater to or profit from the weaknesses or vices of others: to pander to the vile tastes of the vulgar masses.
verb (used with object)
to act as a pimp or procurer of clients for (a prostitute). _______________________________________________
I am not who those retailers think I am or who they want me to be. And...pride. Well! Pride is a sin and I hear it goes before destruction.
If I think I need something, I will re-calibrate the necessity and perform a hard internal audit. “Do I really need it?” The answer will be “probably not”.
I am not talking about food or essentials, although, if you have learned your lesson you should have a garage full of toilet paper from the last scare. (side note: if we are starving to death, we won’t need toilet paper. Hmmm?)
So...just for the month of June, I am not going to buy cheap crap that I may or may not need. I will not buy anything except food, and the food will come from places that don’t offend me. I will buy at the farmer’s markets or local grocers, if I can afford it. Have you been to the grocery store lately? Prices are out of control.
I will live without the new TV, the birdcage, or the eye liner. I will live without the new shorts or purse. I can make do with what I already have until July. Then I will buy what I need. And, maybe by then, I won’t want it at all.
I'll do my best, SadieJay! And you're right when you ask yourself, do I really need this? Almost always, Nope. Thanks.
Nice! There is supposed to be magic there!
